Yuri Ebihara Japan’s top model eyes global catwalk

The 29-year-old has decided she is too sexy for Japan and wants to share the red carpet with the international jet set in Paris, New York and Milan.

"I’ve done Japan," Ebihara told Reuters in an interview, immediately gasping and covering her face in embarrassment. "I just mean I want to work with the top people in the world."

Ebihara, popularly known in Japan as "Ebi-chan" ("baby shrimp"), reigns supreme as her country’s hottest magazine and TV model, with her enormous selling power in Japan and Asia used on everything from cosmetics to fastfood chains.

"Until now it was fine being in the ’pretty-cutesy’ brigade and being a hit. I’ve experienced that whole boom," she said before a fashion show in Tokyo.

"Now I want to break out and try the biggest challenge out there. It’s a world I haven’t dipped my toe into yet so I would like to see where it takes me... I’m 30 this year so maybe it’s time to go international."

In Japan Ebihara has become a powerful brand. When McDonald’s used her fluttering eyelashes to promote its "ebi-burger" in 2005, a staggering 10 million of the shrimp meals were sold within a four-week period.

"When we were shooting those commercials I was allowed to spit the burgers out if I ate too many," she laughed. "I’ve eaten fastfood since I was a kid though and still do sometimes."

The 168-centimeter (5ft 6in) tall Ebihara said she would not feel intimidated being dwarfed by the leggy sirens who pose in the pages of Vogue and Cosmopolitan.

"I wouldn’t want to be too tall. I’m all right as I am — Kate Moss (169 cm) is small too. I like her and Gisele (Bundchen)," said the Japanese superstar whose twin sister chose not to pursue a career in modeling.

Metronomically punctual and not known for throwing hissy fits, Ebihara insisted she had the "minerals" to stamp her mark among the fashionistas of Paris and New York.

"International models have very strong personalities. They may wonder what someone as ’ordinary’ as me is doing there," said Ebihara, wearing a colorful lace dress and black heels.

"There’s room for normal. I’d stand up to them. I would love the opportunity. The style of walking is different but all I need is a catwalk and I’ll be totally able to do my thing."

The squeaky-clean Ebihara, who broke hearts recently following rumors she was marrying her rapper boyfriend Ilmari from the Japanese band Rip Slyme, says she has yet to throw a mobile phone in anger.

Informed that tabloid scandal sometimes comes with the territory of being a supermodel, she wrinkled her nose and joked: "Have I done anything scandalous? Maybe..."

Reality stars are crossing over to other shows, just like Kim Kardashian heading over to the CW's America's Next Top Model. She has confirmed on her official website that she'll be appearing on the hit competition as a guest judge.
While it's something her fans will be excited about, let's not get ahead of ourselves. The thirteenth installment of the show is getting ready to air this September, according to The CW Source. The Keeping Up with the Kardashians star will be seen on one episode, but details about the challenge haven't been released.
Kim Kardashian is certainly excited at her upcoming participation in the show, even saying that the new twist is something worth looking out for. "Wow, this cycle is pretty amazing! It's definitely my favorite so far," she exclaimed.
The reality celebrity said that working on the set was an unforgettable experience. "It was such an honor to be a guest judge!" Kim Kardashian went on. "I have watched this show for years and am such a huge Tyra Banks fan! She is such a smart business woman and such a role model!"
Even though the twelfth season has just wrapped up, the schedule of America's Next Top Model Cycle 13 has already been released. On Wednesday, September 9, the network will be airing the series' "Shorty Edition" will in a two-hour special at 7pm. With a new batch of aspiring models and even more surprises, it's no wonder Kim Kardashian is raving about it.
America's Next Top Model's 13th Cycle has been famed for choosing contestants with a height 5' 7" and under, considered short in the modeling industry. The requirement was released when Tyra and the producers decided to give shorter girls a chance, and it looks like it's going to be quite a season. The drama has already begun at the casting calls, when a stampede took place. Who knows what could happen when you put these aspiring models alongside Kim Kardashian herself?

After an eleven-year partnership resulting in one of hip-hop's most impressive and consistent discographies -- including 2001's classic The Blueprint -- hip-hop superstar Jay-Z has announced his departure from longtime label Def Jam.

"I can honestly say, working with [Universal Music Group CEO] Doug Morris and [Def Jam chairman] L.A. Reid has been a unique and fulfilling experience and I respect them immensely," the man also known as Shawn Carter confirmed to Rap Radar. "I've been in the family for almost my entire career. I thank [Morris] for allowing me to be a completely independent artist. Not every artist can say they own or are given the opportunity to own all of their music."

It does, however, look like his departure came at a hefty price: Hits Daily Double has reported that Jay-Z paid $5 million for the rights to the remainder of his contract, which included one more album for Def Jam.

That album -- the long-delayed Blueprint 3, which as of press time has no release date attached -- will likely be released on the newly established, Jay-managed Roc Nation label, which functions under the umbrella of the rapper's $150 million contract with music megacorp Live Nation.

And this fashion models fever is not just for the rich -- India's growing ranks of wealthy, well-heeled and Western educated professionals with careers in multinational companies and a chunk of disposable income are leading the change.

India's economy, one of the fastest growing in the world, is also turning the Asian country into an international business force, which in turn means more global exposure for businessmen who are keen to look the part.

On Monday, men's magazine GQ India hits the newsstands, following in the footsteps of other male-only publications such as Men's Health, Maxim, and FHM, and experts are saying this is further proof that Indian men are embracing more global fashions.

"A certain segment of male Indian society has always pampered itself and spent a lot on clothes," Che Kurrien, GQ India editor, told Reuters.
